Sayulita Color story.

I hesitate even to share the secret of the beautiful little town in Mexico, Sayulita. But that would be selfish... tsk, tsk....
We went for a week and could have easily become one of those ex- pat couples that move there, buy a VW, adopt a dog and stay forever...
Here is just a taste of the color and flavor of this lovely place. My scarves work well here!
We are going back in December. We will be sure to visit our friends ( the 2 handsome blokes in photos) who own the best juice bar in Sayulita, Orangy.

Echos of nature.

This shibori tied, twice dipped silk looks similar to a photo that NASA took of a volcano range in South America.
Weld and Indigo make for an emerald green and Lapis Lazuli blue scarf.

This false-color image of Colombia's Galeras Volcano, was acquired by UAVSAR on March 13, 2013. A highly active volcano, Galeras features a breached caldera and an active cone that produces numerous small to moderate explosive eruptions. It is located immediately west of the city of Pasto.

Mellow Yellow.

I'm just mad about weld. This citrussy, vivid yellow works surprisingly well with taupe from chestnut. Of course, the combination of weld extract and indigo is striking- but this is a tad more unexpected. Looks as though I'm not the only one with this idea... Michelle from Project Runway just won the Lord & Taylor challenge with her citrine and taupe mini dress.

Bedding to make you better.

This queen sized linen duvet and shams has been especially dyed to hold healing properties. Madder root is known to have immune system boosting qualities, on top of making the most luscious orange color. Turmeric and quebracho red were used as well. Raw edges and the finest unbleached, un-dyed linen, create a super soft, truly one of a kind bedding experience.

Latvian Easter Egg Dyeing. (and French Onion Soup)

This year, instead of purchasing a regular “same old, same old” egg dying kit, try using some of the food from your kitchen to color your eggs. Or try your hand at Latvian Egg dyeing, by wrapping eggs with onion skins, tying them snuggly in some silk or old nylons, and gently drop into boiling in water. This is what we did at Terrain today, but you can do at home in your own kitchen. Then make the  French Onion Soup recipe courtesy of Tyler Florence...you will need a lot of onion skins, and find yourself knee deep in onions. When life gives you onions... Make French onion soup!
Spinach = Pale Green
Hibiscus tea = Green
Blueberries = Light to Deep Blue
Red Cabbage = Robin’s egg Blue
Cranberries = Lavender
Beet Juice = Pale Pink
* The longer you leave the eggs in, the more the color changes

  • Decide what colors you would like to try
  • Depending on what color you’d like to try, add each item to it’s own small pot
  • Add enough water to cover eggs
  • Bring liquid to a low boil for approx. 10-20 minutes
  • Remove from heat & allow to cool slightly
  • Add 4 tablespoons of white vinegar
  • Gently add eggs and boil on low for 15 minutes
  • Turn off heat, cover, and leave eggs in dye bath until they reach desired color (can be 3 hours for deep shades)
  • Remove eggs with a slotted spoon and place on rack to dry
  • You can use a paper towel dampened with a bit of vegetable oil to rub the eggs & give them a slight shine, but I love the natural finish .
